Though you can prevent decay and cavities, if they happen to develop, you should seek treatment as soon as possible. Luckily, it is easy to treat tooth decay and cavity. Preventing decay and cavities, allow you to avoid undergoing costly tooth restoration procedures such as dental implants, crown placement, or root canal therapy.
Treating Tooth Decay
A dentist can treat decay by first numbing the tooth and carefully removing the decayed tissue. The dentist then restores the tooth with a filling or tooth-colored resin material. You can get traditional fillings like silver amalgam or inlays. If the decay has advanced and affected the pulp or has caused an abscess around the root, root canal therapy may be performed. A dentist can inspect the tooth for decay and suggest an appropriate restorative procedure.
Preventing Tooth Decay
Maintaining healthy oral habits goes a long in preventing most tooth decay or tooth loss issues. As a rule of thumb, brush twice daily and perform daily flossing at least once. When brushing, have two minutes to spend cleaning the teeth and gums. You can also go for fluoride treatment. The fluoride mineral helps prevent decay by making the enamel stronger. Fluoride treatment, besides preventing the progression of decay, can also reverse certain early decay. Most toothpastes have fluoride. You can also find the mineral in mouth rinses as well as tap water.
Additionally, drink plenty of water. It helps flush away acids in the mouth, which can erode the enamel. If you are a frequent snacker, keep healthy snacks. Avoid foods that stick in the teeth. Ensure you brush after snacking. Eating fruits and veggies helps increase saliva flow. You can also consume unsweetened tea, coffee, and sugar-free gum as they help clear food particles from the mouth. See our dentist to have paint sealants on your teeth so that get a shield for the teeth surfaces against destructive acids.
