Danger of Going to Other Countries for Cheaper Dental Care
Posted on 9/6/2021 by Dr. Saklofsky
Many of us are tempted by the almighty dollar, and we do all we can to save it even though we spend frivolously. We drive three hours to get a deal on a camper advertised on Craigslist. We go to three different shops to find the cheapest apples. We cut coupons, we search for promo codes, and only get one topping on our pizza so we can get another one free. When it comes to material items, many strategies can work to save money. However, when it comes to healthcare and dental care, we feel it is necessary to carefully examine the value of the service versus the cost.
Is it Apples to Apples?
It is true, the dental care in other countries may be far cheaper than what you receive in America. However, are you getting the same care?
In America, most regular dental exams are similar. The exam includes evaluating your risk of oral problems and checking your face and neck for abnormalities. We also check your bite and jaw alignment. You may have x-rays or other diagnostic procedures. We compare your current status to your dental records. We discuss your diet and oral hygiene, as well as educate you on proper brushing and flossing techniques. We also thoroughly clean your teeth to remove stains and tartar and assess your need for fluoride treatments. We check for cavities and look for other potential problems as well.
If we do find an issue, we know how to take care of it. We have a history with you and understand how medications work in your body. If you choose to go for another country for dental care, you may be surprised that your appointment is nothing like your appointment in America. Instruments are not calibrated the same, exams and cleanings are not as thorough, and hygienists may not be as gentle in other countries. Not to mention, many other countries do not have the latest technology. Due to the language barrier, the dentist may not be able to explain or educate you and you may not get your questions answered. Is it cheaper given the differences and the travel cost?
