Most people understand the importance of good oral hygiene. At the very least, you should brush your teeth every day, and, possibly, use a mouthwash. Unfortunately, most people don't keep up with flossing no matter our recommendations. Even worse, most people don't think about scraping their tongue when brushing. Brushing your tongue is very necessary and important. If you fail to brush your tongue, you risk oral problems like bad breath, gum infections, inability to taste foods and drinks, and yeast infection.
Bad Breath
If you don't brush your teeth, you are more likely to have bad breath. This is caused by the bacteria that accumulate on your tongue. Start brushing your tongue immediately to get rid of such conditions.
Inability to Taste Foods and Drinks
If bacteria accumulate on your tongue, it leads to the formation of a biofilm. Biofilm blocks your taste buds, making it difficult to taste foods and drinks. This can be a major setback, especially if you enjoy eating. If you are experiencing such problems, come to our offices for thorough cleaning. You should also start cleaning your tongue henceforth.
Gum Infections
Many cases of gum disease are caused by bacteria in your mouth. You can get rid of bacteria in most parts of your mouth by brushing, but leave out the ones on your tongue. These bacteria will spread to your teeth and gums, causing gum disease. Some of the early symptoms of gum disease include red, swollen, and irritated gums. If you notice these signs, come to our offices for immediate treatment. This is because gum disease can quickly advance (periodontitis) if left untreated. Periodontitis is a severe form of gum disease that can cause tooth loss.
Yeast Infection
Yeast infection, also known as oral thrush, can develop when you let bacteria in your mouth multiply. Your tongue will suffer severe damage if you are infected with this condition. Contact our office if you are unsure of how to clean your tongue effectively.
