Teeth Can Die and Leave Your Oral Health in Danger
Posted on 5/10/2021 by Dr. Saklofsky
Some people may not understand that teeth are alive. It may not seem like it, but each tooth is a living part of your body. While teeth do not have external nerves, they do bleed when they are traumatized or when they have a cavity. If your tooth dies, your oral health could be in danger.
Symptoms of a Dead Tooth
If your tooth is dying, some common symptoms often persist. A dead tooth is often discolored. It may look yellow, gray, or slightly black. The tooth may smell. A dead tooth can cause a bad taste in your mouth as a result of tooth decay or other oral infections. You may feel discomfort on the gum line. The infection inside the tooth may cause pain.
The Negative Effects of a Dead Tooth
It is important to treat a dead or dying tooth as soon as possible because it could lead to bigger problems. If you leave a dying to the untreated, the bacteria from that tooth could spread. Unfortunately, that same bacteria could cause the loss of additional teeth. Ultimately, the bacteria from the dead tooth could impact your gums and jawbone as well.
Make an Appointment Today
It is important to prioritize your dental cleaning and checkup. Ideally, we like to see the same patient twice in the year. During that visit we look for any discoloration on your teeth and discuss any sensitivities you may have in your teeth or gums. Additionally, we take x rays that can easily help us identify a dead or dying tooth. If you have a dead tooth, we may suggest a root canal or counsel you to have the tooth removed. Call our office a call today to schedule your next cleaning and exam. We look forward to working with you to have the best possible oral hygiene.
