The Different Types of Mouthguards

The Different Types of MouthguardsMouthguards are a common dental accessory for athletes and those who are involved in extreme sports to protect their teeth. However, that's not the only reason behind wearing a mouthguard. There are various different types of mouthguards for different purposes. Here are some of them.

Stock Mouthguards

These are the most widely available and commonly used mouthguards. They usually come in three standard sizes, small, medium and large. They are quite affordable as well, so anyone can buy and start using them.

You can easily find them at most sports stores or drug stores. Since they come in a standard size, most people find them uncomfortable to wear as they don't fit properly. Moreover, they can also make it hard to speak freely at times.

Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards

Boil-and-bite mouthguards are similar to stock mouthguards in the sense that they are also widely available and quite affordable as well. However, unlike the stock mouthguards, they come in one standard size that can somewhat be altered to fit your mouth.

As the name suggests, you have to boil the mouthguard first to soften it and then you bite down on it to mold it according to the shape of your teeth. This gives it a better fit. However, this kind of mouthguard is not very durable and becomes brittle over time.

Custom-Fitted Mouthguards

You can get custom-made mouthguards by contacting Dr.Brian Saklofsky, DMD at Lincoln Center Smiles. We will take the exact mold of your teeth and gums and create the perfect mouthguard that fits comfortably in your mouth.

This way, there is also a lower chance of dislodging the mouthguard during your sleep or other activities. Custom-made mouthguards can be slightly more expensive, but they are also much more comfortable and effective at treating problems like bruxism, sleep apnea, snoring, and more. In fact, we can even make mouthguards for your lower teeth in case you have braces.

Either way, if you have a certain medical condition or are involved in dangerous sports, make sure to wear your mouthguards to protect your teeth and gums and prevent the worsening of any dental conditions.
