The Danger of Ignoring Your Dry Mouth

The Danger of Ignoring Your Dry MouthUnfortunately, even though we live in a time of incredible medical advancement, many people still fail to properly take care of their health related issues until they become more serious. This may even be more true for dental health care than it is for any other type. And it is especially the case when the condition does not seem to be too “serious”.

However, any oral health issue, minor or major, should not be ignored. When it comes to dry mouth in particular, here are a few of the possible problems that can progress when treatment is neglected:

Mouth Sores or Thrush

When the mouth is not producing enough saliva, it can lead to a number of other issues both now and down the road. Eating certain foods can cause damage to the gums, creating thin spots and even small cuts or lacerations. Sores are common, as is thrush, which is an oral yeast infection.

Development of Gum Disease

The early stage of gum disease known as gingivitis is actually still reversible. Once it progresses on to the moderate stages or the advanced stages, known as periodontal disease, the best method of treatment only serves to manage the condition and reduce the symptoms. There is no reason to allow a case of dry mouth to progress to this point.

Tooth Decay and Loss

Whether from the dry mouth itself or the gum disease which developed as a result, tooth decay and ultimately the loss of teeth is sometimes the end result for an untreated condition. A simple visit to our clinics can do wonders and in some cases, the entire problem can be resolved in one trip.

Do not let what is currently a minor and easy-to-treat problem become a major oral health condition. Our staff of dental experts will be more than glad to correct this issue for you. Contact our office today to find out more.
