Financial Impacts of Poor Oral Health

Financial Impacts of Poor Oral HealthThe negative effects caused by poor oral health go far beyond simply having bad teeth or unhealthy gums. They can also impact your overall health and well-being, as well as your financial stability. Ironically, financial limitations are what prevent so many from getting routine dental care. In the meantime, minor oral conditions can develop into serious ones with an astronomical price tag for those without dental insurance.

Furthermore, putting off routine dental visits can cause problems elsewhere in your body, including your heart, digestive tract and your immune system, just to name a few. That is why our dental professionals are skilled and conscientious in recognizing oral symptoms that can be indicators of other serious health conditions.

Hidden Costs of Poor Oral Health

It is estimated that more than 500 types of bacteria are present in your mouth at any given time. These bacteria create plaque that accumulates between your teeth and along your gum line. This can cause gum disease, which, if left untreated, can lead to severe tooth decay, tooth loss and/or advanced gum disease (periodontitis).

Treating these conditions alone can result in hefty dental bills. When left untreated, however, they can lead to other serious health problems requiring medical intervention, medications and therapies accompanied by significant financial expenditures. Not to mention, any of these health problems can also cause people to lose income due to missing work. Moreover, they can become so acutely serious as to require costly emergency room visits.

Although the long-term costs of poor oral care aren't as clear as a dental bill, they are nonetheless real. We are committed to helping our patients take control of their overall health through oral care. Contact our office today with any questions or concerns and to schedule a comprehensive exam.
