Why Do Gums Recede?
When your gum tissue shrinks, it is called receding gums. Receding gums happen sometimes due to age, and sometimes due to gum disease. As you get older, your gum tissue shrinks some. If you are taking good care of your mouth, you can make sure that receding gums are gradual- if it happens at all. However, gum disease can accelerate the speed at which your gums recede.
Gum Disease
The main culprit of gum resorption is gum disease. Gum disease is a bacterial infection of your gums. If you catch it early, and you practice good oral health, you can cure gum disease. However, if you don't catch gum disease at its early stages, there is no cure, but it can be treated. Over time, gum disease can lead to tissue damage, tooth loss and even loss of bone.
When you have infected gums, the infected tissue recedes. In some cases, the gums themselves can be resorbed, or disappear. This happens when your body feels that the tissue can be better used in other parts of your mouth. It also happens because your gums can get so infected the tissues are reabsorbed by the infection. None of these things are good for your mouth.
