Easing Pain When You Have an Oral Infection

Posted on 11/15/2025 by Lincoln Center Smiles
Man with jaw and overall mouth pain. Dealing with pain from an oral infection can be really tough. It can affect everything from what you eat to how well you sleep. The good news is, there are ways to manage the discomfort while you're getting the care you need to heal. Let's explore some steps you can take to find relief.

Understanding Oral Infections

First, it's important to know what we're talking about. An oral infection happens when harmful bacteria invade your mouth. This can occur for several reasons, like a cavity that's gone too deep, an injury, or even after certain dental procedures. Common signs of an oral infection include:
•  Throbbing pain
•  Swelling
•  Redness
•  Sensitivity to hot or cold
•  Bad taste or odor in your mouth
•  Fever (in some cases)

If you notice any of these symptoms, it's crucial to see a dental professional as soon as possible.

Immediate Pain Relief Strategies

While you're waiting for your appointment, here are some things you can do to ease the pain:
•  Saltwater Rinse: Mix a half-teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and gently rinse your mouth for about 30 seconds. Do this several times a day. Saltwater helps reduce inflammation and can kill some bacteria.
•  Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers: Medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain and reduce fever. Always follow the directions on the label.
•  Cold Compress: Apply a cold compress or ice pack to the outside of your cheek near the affected area for 15-20 minutes at a time. This can help numb the area and reduce swelling.
•  Avoid Irritants: Stay away from foods and drinks that are very hot, cold, spicy, or acidic, as these can irritate the infected area. Also, avoid chewing on the side of your mouth where the infection is.
•  Soft Food Diet: Stick to soft foods that are easy to chew and swallow. Think soups, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies.

The Importance of Oral Care

Even with an oral infection, good oral care is still important, but you need to be gentle. Continue to brush your teeth twice a day, but use a soft-bristled toothbrush and be extra careful around the infected area. Floss gently, if possible, avoiding direct contact with the affected area if it's too painful. Proper oral care can prevent the infection from worsening and promote healing.

Long-Term Solutions and Prevention

The strategies discussed above are temporary ways to manage pain. To truly resolve the issue, you'll need professional dental care. The type of treatment will depend on the cause and severity of the infection. This may include antibiotics to fight the bacteria, a root canal to treat an infected tooth, or even extraction in severe cases. After the infection is cleared, your dentist may recommend restoration dentistry options to repair any damage to your teeth.

Preventing oral infections in the first place is the best approach. This includes:
•  Brushing and flossing regularly
•  Visiting your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings
•  Eating a balanced diet low in sugar
•  Avoiding tobacco products

Taking these steps can significantly reduce your risk of developing an oral infection and help you maintain a healthy smile. Remember, addressing pain from an oral infection requires a combination of immediate relief measures and professional dental care.
