Practical Strategies for Managing Pain and Discomfort during Orthodontic Treatment
Posted on 4/10/2023 by Dr. Saklofsky
Pain and discomfort are joint during orthodontic treatment, especially for an individual doing it for the first time. More so, you can feel pain and hurt within the first few days after the fitting of braces or when the dentist adjusts the braces.
However, orthodontists have devised practical approaches to manage this pain and discomfort, especially during the first few days and the other healing days.
Use of Over-the-Counter Medication
Orthodontists provide over-the-counter- pain relief medication with prescription guidance on how to take medicine and for how long. Such drugs include ibuprofen and acetaminophen, which are effective reducers of pain and discomfort brought about by orthodontic treatment.
Regular Saltwater Rinses
Rinsing the mouth with salt water once or twice a day soothes the gums and tissues of the area of the mouth that have received the treatment, hence reducing inflammation. Also, salty water prevents the accumulation of bacteria as the alkalinity level of the salt is essential in avoiding bacteria attacks which can lead to dental issues.
Wax and Relief Gel Application
The orthodontists have a unique orthodontic wax that they apply within the brackets and the wires of the braces, and clear aligners to reduce the inflammation caused by irritation. The resin acts as a lubricant in preventing the braces from rubbing against the sides of the mouth.
More so, the wax reduces inflammation, thus reducing swelling and redness of the area treated, thus reducing pain and discomfort. Another way is gel application which numbs the treated area, thus minimizing discomfort.
Most of the pain and discomfort from orthodontic treatment is temporal and reduces as the mouth adapts to the braces. Hence, it's necessary to follow the instructions given by your orthodontists to manage and reduce pain and discomfort quickly.
